Good Morning Las Cruces! Las Cruces is serving up full moons, 1926 silent cinema with a live band, wellness vibes, and classic community gatherings — all while the asphalt tries to melt.

A 1926 silent film masterpiece, Faust, with Austin’s Invincible Czars performing a brand-new original live score in the room with the movie. How cool is this!!

F.W. Murnau’s Faust (1926) is pure German Expressionist magic — the same director who gave us Nosferatu. It’s the ultimate “deal with the devil” story: an aging alchemist bargains with Mephisto to save his plague-ridden village, then gets seduced by youth, power, and desire… with tragic results. The visuals are still stunning a century later. This isn’t some dusty old silent film; it’s cinematic mythology done at the peak of the form.

The historic Fountain Theatre in Mesilla (New Mexico’s oldest operating movie house) is the ideal intimate space for this. You’re not in a giant multiplex. You’re in a charming, atmospheric room with a live band right there, supporting the Mesilla Valley Film Society while experiencing something that simply can’t be streamed.

Proposed changes to Section 106 could weaken local control over historic resources. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is advancing revisions that shift decision-making to federal agencies, removing the guaranteed right of local governments to be notified or consult on projects affecting historic properties. Public input would become optional.

For Las Cruces and Mesilla, this risks sidelining community voices on federally connected projects that could impact downtown districts, historic neighborhoods, and culturally significant sites.
