White Sands Balloon Invitational — this Saturday & Sunday
The 34th annual White Sands Balloon Invitational lifts off this weekend, Sept. 19–20, with balloons over the dunes and Alamogordo. Saturday’s mass ascension is at White Sands National Park (arrive 5:30–6:30 a.m.; lift-off 7:30–8 a.m.; $25 per vehicle). Sunday’s flight is free at Ed Brabson Balloon Park, 700 Lavelle Rd. (arrive ~6:45–7 a.m.; lift-off 7:30–8 a.m.). This year’s event is back to basics—balloons and tradition, no glow, vendors, or entertainment—and flights are weather-dependent, so check whitesandsballoons.com before you go.
Spaceport America Open House
Spaceport America’s 2026 Open House is Saturday, September 26, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport (County Road A021, Truth or Consequences) Free, but you have to register first. Expect rockets and unusual aircraft, STEM stations, speakers, local food trucks, and a chance to wander a facility that is usually locked down.
Register here: Eventbrite or via spaceportamerica.com/open-house.
Las Cruces Space Festival and Art Show
Las Cruces Space Festival runs Sept. 19–26, and this town finally gets to show off the thing it’s been orbiting for decades.
Kickoff is tomorrow: art-show opening at The Hood (5–8 p.m.) and International Observe the Moon Night on the Plaza (6–9 p.m.). Then it’s space trivia at TorC Brewing (Sept. 24), NMSU Astronomy Night plus a Challenger mission (Sept. 25), and Saturday’s doubleheader — Spaceport America Open House and Space Fest at the Museum of Nature & Science. The student-led art show (“Space Unites Us”) stays up at The Hood through Oct. 4.
