Free book festival this Saturday at DACC East Mesa

Southern New Mexico Book Festival · Sat, Oct 3 · 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. · DASR Building, 2800 Sonoma Ranch Blvd. Last year drew 800 people.

Local authors will read The Lost Javelina Explores the Organ Mountains, Kato’s Grand Adventure, and books by the Womack kids (ages 9 and 11). There are free books to take home, Dolly Parton Imagination Library sign-ups, and a mini-bookcase workshop. Adults get author panels and a courtyard full of publishers and bookstores while the kids are happily occupied.

2026 Empty Bowls Charity Auction

Local artists loaded this one. The Potters’ Guild of Las Cruces, Border Artists, Austins Fine Jewelry, and Agave Gallery donated the work — Mesilla Valley Estate Sales is running the sale — and 100% of proceeds go to El Caldito Soup Kitchen, which serves 300–500 meals a day, every day of the year.

Worth a look: two squash blossom necklaces, a turquoise necklace-and-bracelet set, Shane Casias’s Zia sun necklace, a signed Peter Voulkos pot, Steven Hill and Amanda Jaffe ceramics, crystalline bowls, and Bill Kaderly sculptures. Pottery lessons from Cally Williams are in there too.

The in-person Empty Bowls lunch is Friday, Oct. 9 at St. Paul’s. This online auction runs from Tuesday Oct. 06 through Thursday, Oct. 15 at 6 pm.
